The History of Under Oak
Under Oak was built in 2018.
Designed by Dan - he was told by two seperate builders that the unsupported arch couldn’t be done, so he and Jake went about working it out themselves!
They found trees growing in the woods that had the right angle of curve and went about bolting them together.
This was a community project in the true sense of the word. John Macbeth from Uckfield Community School, brought a group of students to the woods on a weekly basis for the duration of the build, to help with creating the interior and raising the frame.
Initially, the bunks were made of chestnut poles, like the slats on a bed, but this proved to be too uncomfortable, so they were later replaced with the planks that you see when you visit now.
The area in front of the site is chestnut coppice and the aim is to keep it low so that the view out over the woods is maintained - in the autumn and winter you can see the acid-grassland of Bat Park and the aipary (bee hives) below.
WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE SOME WORKING PICTURES OF THE PROCESS? MIGHT THE SCHOOL HAVE SOME THAT ARE ‘SAFE’ TO USE?
