Sashiko: Beginner Workshop (3 Hours)

Discover the beauty of hitomezashi, a traditional one-stitch style of Japanese sashiko known for its rhythmic patterns and meditative stitching. In this 3-hour hands-on class, students will learn the fundamentals of this timeless craft while creating a sampler piece to take home.

What You’ll Learn:

• The cultural background and purpose of sashiko and hitomezashi

• How to prepare fabric, transfer patterns, and thread sashiko needles

• Essential stitching techniques, spacing, and direction for clean, even designs

• How to create classic hitomezashi patterns such as grids, linked crosses, and simple geometric repeats

• Tips for tension control, knotting, finishing, and troubleshooting

What’s Included:

• Linen cotton mix fabric

• Sashiko needle and thread

Who This Class Is For:

Beginners and returning stitchers alike—no prior embroidery experience is needed. This class is perfect for anyone interested in slow stitching, textile arts, visible mending, or simply enjoying a calming, creative experience.

Outcome:

By the end of the workshop, students will leave with a completed (or nearly completed) hitomezashi sampler, the skills to create their own patterns, and the confidence to continue sashiko stitching on clothing, accessories, and home textiles.
