Introduction to hewing with Victor Martz: converting a tree into a beam... with an axe

Do you know that for the last few thousand years, most European timber has been squared with an axe? And now it’s on the endangered craft list of English Heritage!

Come and spend four days at Wilderness Wood continuing this wonderful and endangered tradition with Victor, who has been hewing professionally for the last 10 years, notably for the reconstruction of Notre Dame de Paris!

Over the four days you will:

  • learn how to turn a tree from Wilderness Wood into a beam for a beautiful cabin

  • gain knowledge of different axes and log dogs

  • develop your techniques in weilding an axe safely and accurately

  • learn how to ping lines on curvy surfaces

  • work up a sweat!

Tools and shin protection provided.

Bring your steel toe caps.

Cost: £495 including vegetarian lunches and a meal together on the Thursday night (5% discount for members)
