Introduction to traditional french framing with Victor Martz

Learn how to turn curvy and twisted pieces of wood into beautiful and strong trusses under the instruction of Victor, experienced hewer and traditional timber framer of Notredam fame!

  • your material has been hewed with axes and the human hand rather than machine - so it’s beautifully wonky

  • you’ll work with hand tools, and learn traditional scribing techniques

  • you’ll learn how to set up your wavy wood

  • you’ll learn how to cut tenon and mortice joints

Victor says:

“In France, probably since before mediaval times, french timber framers have been using methods different from English methods. "Trait de charpente" and "piquage" are parts of the french scribing technique on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list of UNESCO. Since "trait de charpente" is still quite obscure and fairly useless to me (I'll bring some books so you can have a look), "piquage" is where magic operates and allows the logical mind to transform rough pieces of wood into beautiful carpentry.
