Visible Mending Workshop: Patching & Darning (3 Hours)

Celebrate sustainability and creativity through the art of visible mending. In this 3-hour hands-on workshop, you will learn practical and beautiful techniques to repair worn or damaged clothing using both patching and darning methods. Whether you're new to hand-stitching or looking to expand your mending skills, this class offers an inspiring introduction to repairing garments (clothes, blankets, cushion covers etc). Show your fabric some love and help prolong its life!

What You’ll Learn:

• The philosophy and practice of visible mending

• How to assess different types of fabric damage and choose the right repair method

• Hand-sewing basics for repair work: threading, securing, and controlling tension

• Techniques for patching, including decorative and structural patches

• Techniques for darning, including woven-style darns and creative patterned fills

• Tips for strengthening fabric, blending vs. highlighting the mend, and selecting materials for durability

What’s Included:

• Fabric patches and scrap materials for practice

• Needles, thread, and darning tools

• Instruction sheets and technique guides

• Optional practice swatches if you prefer not to work on their own garments

  • Tea and snacks!

What to Bring:

You are encouraged to bring 1–2 garments with small holes, thinning areas, or tears (knits or wovens welcome). Lucy and Kate will help assess which items are suitable and which repairs to choose, either within the class or to take home to work on.

Who This Class Is For:

Perfect for beginners, makers, upcyclers, and anyone aiming to extend the life of their clothing while adding personal touches. No sewing experience required.

Outcome:

You will leave with at least one repaired garment or practice sample, plus the confidence and skills to continue patching and darning at home—transforming wear and tear into unique details.
